When I first started my coaching business, I knew I wanted to help people. I mean, I basically coached people all the time for free. I love it. It’s who I am, and my best friend Ryan always told me I needed to start a coaching business and actually get paid for the advice I was giving out. So, while the seed was planted, I had no clue where to start.
So, what did I do? I consumed EVERYTHING I could get my hands on about how to build a coaching business, how to build an online presence, how to build a brand on Instagram, and how to grow an email list. Now, all of this was incredible, but I got information overload and I didn’t know what to do first or where to spend my time to move my business forward.
Do I need a logo? Do I need a website? How do I create one? So, I Googled and bought a URL. Then I bought a Template. Oh, AND I remembered I’m supposed to be posting on Instagram and creating content pillars and learning how to use Canva to create the posts. I even ran a Facebook group and signed up for Flodesk and created a freebie to put out there.
I literally did it all, but you want to know the truth? I didn’t make a dime from any of it. Not a single freaking penny. And I share this because I want you to know it’s normal, but I knew there had to be a better way.
Create an Offer
The very first thing I would do is create an offer. This could be one-on-one coaching, a 90-minute intensive, whatever it is, I would pick something I’m really good at, my experience with it, what my own transformation has been, and create a bomb-ass offer that people will actually want to buy that is valuable.
And how do you make it valuable? You center it around a skill set or transformation.
Get Crystal Clear on Who Your Offer is For and How It Will Help Them
Now, this is something that takes practice. For a lot of us, we’re so close to our offer that we struggle to talk about the transformation, which is the thing people care about most. So, on day 1, I’m creating my offer, and on day 2, I’m getting crystal clear on how to talk about it and focusing all of my content creation on that messaging.
The other thing that makes a huge impact is sharing your personal story and transformation online so people can relate to you. You want to share the before and after because you’re sharing your own journey and showing you’re an authority. You’re showing them that you have done this and now you want to teach other people how to do it too.
Focus on Doing Free Events
Free content events are something I would try to do at least monthly or quarterly. What do I mean by content events?
All of these being on topics related to that one bomb-ass offer.
For example, let’s look at my Lit Life Course. I would do a 3-day challenge on how to end self-sabotage or a free masterclass on why the law of attraction alone isn’t enough and what else you need in order to master manifestation. Giving those little nuggets that would get someone interested in my program. And anytime I would do these, I would promote them like crazy.
Because here’s the thing: when you’re trying to build a coaching business, you want people to understand and feel what it’s like to be in your energy and learn from you, and there’s no better way to do that than inviting them into things that you are doing where they will get that experience.
Guest Coach in Other Programs, Groups, or Masterminds
Now, when you’re choosing to guest coach, you want to be sure that you are choosing programs that are full of your dream clients that you want to get in front of. This way they get to know you, can follow you, and hopefully will want to work with you eventually in some capacity. This is great for two reasons:
Get Really Freaking Good at Coaching
Yes, promoting yourself is awesome, but there’s no substitute for being a really good coach and someone having an incredible experience with you from the moment you start. When you get good at coaching, that is when word of mouth happens and people start to share you all over social media and ask you to guest coach.
Please, always continue to attract new clients, but spend time delivering really good coaching because when you deliver a great experience, that sells itself.
When I started focusing on these things rather than having a cute logo or spending hours on Instagram, that’s when this went from a hobby to a legit coaching business. That’s when I signed my first client. That’s when I made my first $14,000 month. That’s when I was able to quit my 9-5.
