How many times have you had a dream or a goal, but you told yourself you couldn’t do it? This is self-sabotage at its finest. We’ve all been there and I want to talk to you about how to put a freaking stop to it!
What exactly is self-sabotage? It’s when we have a goal or a dream, and we literally prevent ourselves from getting what we want. And honestly- it sounds a little crazy! Like, why would we do that to ourselves?
The crazy this is, this happens to every single one of us at some point in our lives, and that’s why this topic is so important.
Why do we self-sabotage ourselves?
To put it simply: our brains can be assholes. Unfortunately, they are designed to be assholes. The intent is to always keep us safe, to keep us in the known, and to not take risks. Now, this part of our brain is important because it helps us survive, BUT, here’s an even crazier thing: For many of us, that feeling of failure is comfortable for us. This means if your brain’s job is to keep you comfortable, then that part of your brain is going to want you to fail. Like, subconsciously we are craving failure!
So, how do we stop this??
Half the battle is understanding what self-sabotage is and why we do it so you can realize you need to take your power back from that part of your brain. The next piece of this exercise is changing your narrative. Like, you almost have to prove to your subconscious mind that failure is not comfortable. When do you that, it can help you stop that self-sabotaging behavior at the subconscious level.
How do you do this? Think about the fake ass benefits that your brain believes we gain from not pursuing our goals. Those are lies! At the same time, we need to look at the consequences of not taking action and not pursuing our dreams, because those are real consequences. And when your brain knows there are actual consequences for not going after your goals, then it shifts its behavior.
This is truly one of those concepts that once I understood it, changed the game for me. I now know how to shift out of my self-sabotaging behavior so much faster and hopefully, this episode helps you do the same.
