Have you taken the time to look at the kids in your life and see what lessons they have been able to teach you?
I’ve been feeling all the feels lately because my daughter Reese is turning 16 this month, which is crazy to even say, and it feels like Reagan, my 8-year-old, has gone from a little kid to a big kid pretty much overnight.
So I’ve been doing what moms usually do and reflecting on all of it, so I want to share some insight with you and pass on the biggest lessons that my girls have been teaching me.
Let’s start with Reese. One of the things I have been really observant of and aware of with her is that she is so good at forgiving people, and she does this so naturally. It’s one of her superpowers. She sees the good in everyone and always assumes positive intent. Like, when people do eff up, she’s the first person to step into the other person’s perspective and see it from their lens.
She just has this ability to see things differently and understand very quickly that maybe someone didn’t mean to hurt her and it wasn’t their intent. She takes the time to see it and go there, which I don’t think a lot of people do. And then once she does that, and if the person is remorseful, she forgives and lets that shit go. This girl does not know what a grudge is, and I admire that so much about her. It’s something I work on every single day and I do this work with my clients as well.
Reese truly is one of the most incredible humans who has this inner light that shines so bright, and this particular skill that she has is something I want to shine a light on because I know for me, and for a lot of other people, we think that forgiving people can make us weak. But in all actuality, the opposite is true. It takes a much stronger person to forgive than it does to hold a grudge and hold hatred. I hope she never ever loses this quality.
Now let’s talk about my baby, Reagan. One of the things I have been learning from her recently, and this is a big one, is not to be afraid to try new things even if you have no idea if you’re going to be good at them or not. Reagan’s approach to life is that she’s naturally curious. She’s interested in branching out and being versatile, and I think it’s because she’s unafraid to try new things. She’s not scared of sucking, and I’m so proud of her for this.
She learned very early on that if she practices things, she will absolutely get better. She has the mindset that she can do anything, and if she wants to do something, she just has to start and learn and practice the damn thing. Reagan has never let the fear of not being good at something hold her back, and it’s so freaking magical.
Another thing that I love about her is her authenticity. This child has always been herself. She knows who she is and she owns it. I’m always reminded by Reagan that the best way to be in life is you, and I hope she never loses that because authenticity is your superpower. I’ve said it a million times, the more authentic and real you are, you become more magnetic, impactful, and aligned with your dreams.
So, I will leave you with those things: Your authenticity is your superpower, don’t be afraid of trying new things, and always see the good in people.
I have a challenge for you. If you have children in your life whether they are your own kids, your friend’s kids, nieces or nephews, or even your students, I want you to pay attention to the way they approach life because it’s so eye-opening, and I firmly believe that the children in our lives can be the greatest teachers.
