Have you seen reels with quotes that say something like, “I’m just over here trying to stay in my healed girl era and not revert back to my hood girl era?” This quote makes me feel attacked because it’s so true, but it also makes me laugh really hard, because for the last few months, I have felt my hood girl trying to come out, and to be honest, it’s not great. I’ve just felt off and in this kind of funk. It’s not like anything is wrong. I just feel off. Plus, a lot of shit has come up that doesn’t normally come up.
I want to share this with you today because after seeing this quote, I started to really reflect and think about what’s really going on. And most important, how the f*** do I get out of this, because I don’t like being in a funk. I don’t like to feel my hood girl.
And when I say “hood girl”, I mean getting angry or reacting more than I normally do to things in life and in business and staying in a negative place longer than I usually do. It’s so normal, and I’m usually able to shift out of it pretty quickly, but I’m almost like, stuck in the gear.
So, if this ever happens to you, just know you’re not alone because we all do it.
I’ve been talking with my coach about this a lot, and everything just clicked. It’s a classic case of take your own advice. I tell my clients all the time that when they are in a funk to not look at what they’re doing, but how they are being. What does that mean? It means your internal world, how you’re feeling, the thoughts that consume you, the beliefs that are flooding through you, and how you’re showing up. When you start to look at that, it can make things feel a lot less heavy.
So, in talking with my coach, I realized that I also needed to start paying attention to how I was being. And I will admit it’s been a hell of a long time since the last time I took a look internally and checked in on my own mindset. But that’s okay because it happens to all of us.
I turned back to the modalities that I know and teach. For example, I looked at how I was starting my mornings and noticed I was jumping into my days both feet first, not even taking a moment to breathe, which doesn’t serve me. I hadn’t journaled since October of 2022, which is something that has always been a quick 5-minute morning routine that helps me check in and practice gratitude.
You don’t need to get up at 4 am or do yoga every morning. You just need to find something that is simple and makes you feel good. So, what am I doing now? I grab my journal first thing and write, get my lemon water, practice gratitude, and take a couple of deep breaths. Doing all of this shifts my energy and makes me feel better and more in control. I feel calmer, less stressed, and hear less negative self-talk.
Every single time, the answer to getting yourself out of a funk and getting unstuck is to go internal, and look at how you’re being and feeling, and then look at teeny, tiny different ways you can shift and change those feelings. Because it’s so easy to forget that we’re actually in control of our internal world and outer world. What happens in our reality is a direct reflection of what happens inside of us. It’s what we’re attracting.
So, of course, if things aren’t going right in your outer world, the obvious thing to do would be to look inward, but that’s not always obvious, and that’s super annoying. It annoys me when it happens to me! It’s just proof that this energetic work is ongoing. It’s being aware of how you’re feeling, what you’re thinking, and shifting it. It’s a constant state of check-in and shift.
So, here’s your reminder to check in. Notice your thoughts, what you’re saying to yourself, and how you’re feeling, and then figure out what needs to be shifted. And then watch how you feel changes because when how you feel changes, your extremal reality changes every single time.
